From Dated to Dazzling : Inside one of the most stunning bathroom updates in Colonie, NY
If you've been thinking about remodeling your bathroom in the Albany or Colonie area, this story might be exactly the inspiration you need. A few months ago, the team at Capital and Custom Builders had the privilege of transforming a tired, builder-grade bathroom in a Colonie home into something that truly stopped people in their tracks. What started as a simple update turned into a full gut renovation — and the result was nothing short of extraordinary. This is the story of that remodel. And if you're a homeowner in Albany, Colonie, Guilderland, Latham, or anywhere in the Capital Region, it might just be the story of your bathroom too.

The Starting Point : A Bathroom that had Seen Better Days.
The homeowners — a busy family in Colonie — had lived with their original master bathroom for over fifteen years. The builder-grade vanity was warping. The grout was stained beyond saving. The one-piece fiberglass shower unit had yellowed, and the lighting cast a flat, unflattering glow over everything. It was functional, but it was far from enjoyable. They came to Capital and Custom Builders with a simple request: make it feel luxurious. Give us something we'd find in a high-end home. We want to walk into our bathroom and feel like we're at a spa. Challenge accepted.
The Plan : Full Bathroom Renovation Built Around Quality
Our team sat down with the homeowners and walked them through the full scope of what a high-end bathroom remodel could look like. We talked about layout, storage, lighting, and — most importantly — the fixtures and finishes that separate an average bathroom from an unforgettable one. Here in the Albany and Colonie area, we work with some of the best brands in the industry. For this project, we pulled together a selection of products that are widely considered the gold standard in residential bathroom design. For the shower system, we went with Kohler. The Kohler DTV+ digital showering system gave the homeowners total control over water temperature, flow, and even steam — all from a sleek wall-mounted interface. Paired with a Kohler rain head and a handheld wand, stepping into this shower became a full experience rather than a morning routine. The freestanding soaking tub became the centerpiece of the room. We selected a Kallista freestanding tub in a matte white finish — sculptural, deep, and absolutely stunning against the new tile work. There's something about a well-placed freestanding tub that immediately communicates luxury, and this one delivered in every way. For plumbing fixtures — the faucets, the tub filler, the towel bars, the toilet paper holder — we went with Brizo. Brizo's Litze collection in Luxe Gold brought a warm, refined tone to the space that tied everything together. Every piece felt intentional. Nothing was an afterthought. The toilet was a TOTO Neorest — arguably the finest residential toilet on the market. Heated seat, automatic open and close, integrated bidet, and a self-cleaning glaze on the bowl. Once you've used a TOTO Neorest, there's no going back. For the vanity, we custom built a double floating vanity using locally sourced materials right here in the Capital Region. The countertop was honed Calacatta marble, with Robern mirrored medicine cabinets on each side providing both stunning reflection and serious storage. The under-mount sinks were Kohler, and the faucets — again, Brizo Litze in Luxe Gold — tied seamlessly back to the shower and tub fixtures. Lighting was handled by Visual Comfort, one of the most respected names in decorative lighting. We flanked the Robern cabinets with sconces that provided even, flattering light for the mirror while a statement chandelier centered above the freestanding tub added a layer of drama and elegance that made the whole room feel complete.
Tile Work, Where the Room Came to Life
If fixtures are the jewelry of a bathroom, tile is the wardrobe. For this project, we sourced large-format porcelain slabs from Daltile — a 48x48 book-matched slab effect on the shower walls that created the illusion of continuous natural stone. The floor used a contrasting 12x24 Daltile porcelain in a warm greige tone, laid in a staggered pattern that added subtle texture without competing with the walls. A niche in the shower was lined with Ann Sacks handmade ceramic tile in a soft sage green — a small detail that became one of the most talked-about moments in the room. That's what we love about bathroom remodeling. The details matter as much as the big moves. Radiant floor heating by Nuheat was installed under the entire floor area. On a cold Albany winter morning, stepping onto a warm floor is the kind of thing that makes a remodel feel truly worth every dollar.

Transformation : More Than Just a Bathroom
When we walked the homeowners through the finished space for the first time, the reaction said everything. There were tears. There was disbelief. There were a lot of "I can't believe this is in my house" moments. That's what we build for. A bathroom remodel done right isn't just about resale value — though it's worth noting that a high-end master bathroom renovation in the Albany and Colonie market consistently delivers strong returns and helps homes sell faster. It's about how you feel every single morning and every single evening when you walk into that space. It's about giving yourself something beautiful and functional right inside your own home.
